China imported PV sales drop 26.2% YoY in Jan.-Apr. 2022

For the first four months of 2022, there were 241,092 imported passenger vehicles (PVs) delivered across China, representing a 26.2% decrease year over year, according to Sinomach Automobile Co., Ltd., China's largest dealer of imported vehicles.

To be specific, the Jan.-Apr. deliveries of imported cars, SUVs, and MPVs dipped 28.1%, 25.8%, and 2.4% respectively from the previous year to 107,871 units, 123,165 units, and 10,056 units.

Of the imported PVs delivered in the Jan.-Apr. period, 218,656 units were under luxury car brands, representing a 25.3% year-on-year downward movement. Luxury brands consist of Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Cadillac, Lexus, Land Rover, Maserati, MINI, Acura, smart, Tesla, Volvo, Infiniti, etc.

As for monthly performance, the deliveries of imported PVs in China plunged 46.8% from a year earlier to 45,535 units, including 19,418 cars (-50.7% YoY), 24,266 SUVs (-43.7% YoY), and 1,851 MPVs (-39.1% YoY).

In terms of April sales of imported PVs in China, the top 10 brands all logged a year-on-year decline due to the coronavirus resurgence and shortage of car supply. Of them, Audi posted the biggest decrease of 63%, while both Subaru and Lexus logged a year-on-year shrink of over 55%.

In terms of the Jan.-Apr. imported PV deliveries, the rankings of the top ten brands remained the same as that of the first quarter. Despite the overall downturn, Toyota still saw its imported PV sales rise 7.7% in China from a year earlier.
