Shanghai (Gasgoo)-CATL announced on May 19 it recently received the UNECE (the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) R100.03 approval for EV battery systems, which is granted by Germany'sFederal Ministry for Digital and Transport.

The battery giant said obtaining the certificate means that its “quality-first” safety philosophy and capability in battery system have been highly recognized by the UNECE.

The UNECE Regulation No. 100, which addresses internationally recognized general requirements for the electrical safety of electric vehicles, brought the R100.03 amendments into effect in June 2021.

According to CATL, the new regulation has set stricter requirements for EV battery systems, and has added safety risk specifications regarding electrical safety, mechanical safety, environmental safety, and functional safety.

CATL is the world's first company to get the access permit. From September 1, 2023, all EV battery systems exported to the member states of the UNECE must obtain this certificate.

CATL broke ground at its German factory in 2019 and the plant is scheduled to start production by the end of 2022. Located in Thuringia, a state in east-central Germany, the project is managed by CATL's wholly-owned subsidiary, Contemporary Amperex Technology Thuringia GmbH (CATT).

On April 4 this year, CATT was granted the second partial approval for battery cell production from the government of Thuringia, allowing an initial capacity of 8 GWh per year for the plant.

Involving a total investment of 1.8 billion euro, CATT is designed to feature a total production capacity of 14GWh and offer 2,000 jobs to local residents in the future.
