Tesla tops U.S. all-electric and luxury car sales in May

According to foreign media reports, the latest car registration data shows that Tesla has consolidated its position in the pureelectric vehicleand luxury car field in the United States.

According to the latest registration data from Experian, between January and May 2022, Tesla's U.S. new vehicle registrations rose 66% year-on-year to 179,574 vehicles.Ford came in third with 17,409 BEV registrations, well behind Hyundai Motor Group with 27,746.

The Tesla Model Y was the most popular pure electric vehicle in the U.S. market in the first five months, with 82,880 registrations, surpassing the Tesla Model 3 (74,092).The Ford Mustang Mach-E was the third-best-selling pure electric model in the U.S. with 15,491 registrations.Aside from the aforementioned models, there are only two pure electric models with more than 10,000 U.S. registrations, the Tesla Model S (13,008) and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (10,776).Registrations for the Tesla Model X and Kia EV6 were just under 10,000, at 9,594 and 9,508, respectively.

In addition, U.S. second-quarter luxury car and light truck sales were 560,856 units, down 11% year over year, less than the 21% decline in total U.S. auto sales, as supply chain constraints impacted U.S. auto sales.Of the luxury brands, only Tesla, Lincoln, Porsche and Genesis saw their U.S. sales rise in the second quarter.

While Tesla did not release specific U.S. sales for the first half of the year, the Automotive News Research & Data Center estimates that Tesla delivered 118,700 sedans and crossovers in the U.S. in the second quarter. That's a 53% jump from the same period last year.The center also expects Tesla to account for 21.6% of total U.S. luxury vehicle sales in the first half of this year, up from 13% in the first half of 2021.

BMW sold 78,905 U.S. vehicles in the second quarter, down 18 percent from a year earlier, with light trucks accounting for more than two-thirds.Mercedes delivered 79,105 vehicles in the U.S. in the second quarter, down 4 percent from a year earlier, and 200 more than BMW.BMW, however, still led Mercedes-Benz in U.S. sales by 11,263 units in the first half of the year.(Note: Mercedes' figures exclude commercial trucks and vans)

After lagging rival BMW in U.S. quarterly sales by more than a year, Mercedes-Benz regained the lead over BMW in U.S. sales in the second quarter as inventory improved.BMW had 30 days of inventory supply as of June, compared with 36 days for Mercedes-Benz, according to Cox Automotive.

Tesla is also trying to claim the top U.S. luxury car sales in 2022.In the first half of the year, Tesla sold 76,081 more vehicles than second-place BMW.
