In the first half of 2022, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a total of 55 automobile-related recall announcements (including recalls of construction vehicles and tires), a decrease of 24 compared with the same period in 2021.Among them, 37 car brands are involved, and the total recall is about 2.544 million, which is about 44.8% lower than the same period last year.In the first half of 2022, due to the continuous impact of the domestic epidemic, the number of domestic recalls and the total number of recalls decreased significantly, and some changes were also reflected.

In order to facilitate consumers to have a clearer understanding of the domestic recall situation in the first half of the year, Car Quality Network has sorted out the announcements of the State Administration for Market Regulation and sorted them according to the number of recalls from large to small, and finally came up with the following rankings:

1. The recall of self-owned brands accounted for more than 30%, and the German brands had the largest decline

Judging from the recalls of various countries, in the first half of 2022, the total recalls of Japanese, European and self-owned brands have increased to varying degrees.Among them, the total recall of self-owned brands has set a record for the same period over the years. A total of 801,207 vehicles were recalled in the first half of the year, accounting for 31.5% of the total recall in the first half of 2022, ahead of other national brands.Although the number of recalls decreased by 11 compared to the same period last year, the total number of recalls increased significantly by 221% compared with the same period last year.According to the data of the car quality network, the number of complaints about pure quality problems of self-owned brands in the first half of 2022 increased slightly by 0.9% compared with the same period of last year, but the total number of recalls increased significantly, indicating that the importance of self-owned brands on product quality defects is increasing year by year. However, since some of the recall activities were carried out when the State Administration for Market Regulation launched a defect investigation, it reflects that the attitude of some self-owned brand car companies to deal with the problem needs to be improved.

Compared with the same period last year, both the number of recalls and the total amount of recalls for German brands decreased. In the first half of the year, there were 18 recalls and 708,335 vehicles were recalled. It was down 40 percent from the same period last year.In addition, the total recalls of American and Korean brands also decreased, but the decline did not exceed 60%.

2. Self-owned brands focus on the core power system, while luxury brands pay more attention to details

From the perspective of specific recall issues, independent brands mainly focus on the core power system, of which transmission problems account for a large proportion.SAIC-GM-Wuling recalled 609,779 Wuling Hongguang S3 and Xinhongguang S vehicles due to over-sized manual transmission parts, resulting in insufficient gear retention, becoming the car brand with the largest single recall in the first half of 2022.Chery Automobile announced the recall of Arrizo 5 and 2016 Tiggo 7, totaling 146,631 vehicles, due to insufficient clamping force or incorrect position of the clamps in the transmission cooling oil pipe, which caused the transmission cooling oil pipe to fall off, ranking second among its own brands in total recall. .In addition, the 2016 Geely Vision GC7, Dongfeng Fengshen AX7 Mach Edition and other models were also recalled due to gearbox defects.

In terms ofnew energy vehicles, BYD voluntarily recalled nearly 10,000 Tang DMs due to manufacturing defects in power battery pack trays, becoming one of the few plug-in hybrid models to be recalled in recent years. The incident has set an example for other independent brands.

Luxury brand recall issues are relatively scattered, and most of them are detailed design defects, involving "bonnet latch", "seat wiring harness", "vehicle nameplate", etc., while the proportion of core component issues related to vehicle performance has dropped significantly , reflecting the dominant position of luxury brands in core power technology, but there is still room for improvement in vehicle manufacturing processes and quality inspection processes.

3. Software failures are frequent, and OTA upgrades and recalls are getting better and better

With the continuous improvement of the electrification and intelligence level of automobiles, the reasons for the recall have gradually shifted from hardware failures to software problems, which are directly related to driving safety.According to statistics, in the first half of 2022, there were as many as 21vehicle recallsdue to electrical equipment-related failures, with a total recall of more than 1.21 million vehicles. The specific problems focus on the gateway control module and the hydraulic electronic control unit of the brake system. Among them, the domestic Audi Q5L has been recalled on a large scale due to the low position of the gateway control module, which may cause a series of failures, and even cause the power interruption of the vehicle during driving.Beijing Hyundai's new Santana, ix35 and imported Hyundai GRAND SANTAFE have all been recalled due to internal short circuit in the hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU) of the braking system, which may cause a fire in the engine compartment.

In 2020 and 2021, the State Administration for Market Regulation will issue relevant notices twice, clarifying that if manufacturers "use OTA to carry out technical service activities for sold vehicles, they should follow the "Regulations on the Administration of Recall of Defective Automobile Products" and the "Management of Recall of Defective Automobile Products". The “Measures for the Implementation of the Regulations” requires that it be filed with the Quality Development Bureau of the State Administration for Market Regulation. “On April 15 this year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the “Notice on Carrying out Online Auto Software Updates and Filings” to further improve the OTA upgrade recall method. In the first half of 2022, Tesla issued a total of 4 recall announcements, all of which used the OTA upgrade method to solve the problem, which not only reduces the recall cost, but also allows users to keep abreast of the problems of the vehicle and choose the recall plan independently. In addition to Tesla, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus also use OTA remote technology to deal with the problem of multimedia display failures, saving users the trouble of frequently visiting the store to upgrade. It is believed that with the gradual standardization of the OTA recall mechanism and the continuous iteration of automotive intelligent technology, auto companies will take a more rigorous attitude towards OTA recalls, and consumer recognition will continue to increase.
