Auto suspends production at another factory due to chip shortage

SEOUL - South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co said on Friday ithad decided to suspend production at its Asan plant for two days starting Monday due to ashortage of chips .

It said the suspension was due to "supply conditions" of semiconductor parts for the powertrain control unit.

"We are closely monitoring the situation to take timely and necessary measures to optimize production based on supply conditions," Hyundai said in a statement.

The Asan plant produces 300,000 vehicles a year, including the Sonata and Grandeur sedans.

Hyundai Motor announced last week that it will suspend production at its main South Korean plant, Ulsan, from April 7 to April 14 due to chip and component supply issues.

Hyundai has highlighted the severity of the globalchip shortagecrisis,becoming the latest automaker to suspend production due to a shortage ofchips .

Hyundaihas been able to avoid the shortage so far in large part because it has a large inventory of chipscomparedto its global peers,Reuters reported in February .
